Chair of the Board, Hexagon Housing Association
South East London
£13,000 p.a.
Hexagon Housing Association is seeking a new Chair to guide a strong, diverse Board as it improves core services, modernises how it works, and grows its contribution to social housing in South East London. This is an opportunity for an individual who wants their governance experience to make a tangible difference to people’s homes, streets and futures.
Why this role is different
The successful candidate will join at a genuine inflection point: Hexagon is moving from a focused period of building safety work and financial pressure into a phase of service improvement and measured ambition for growth.
The Board is already high calibre and well-balanced, with resident members, strong financial and sector expertise, and a culture of “good disagreement” that supports better decisions. Governance foundations are in place, so the Chair’s focus will be on strategic grip, culture, and outcomes for residents – not rebuilding basics from scratch.
What the successful candidate will gain
- A real social impact: they will see the effect of their leadership in the quality of repairs, safety, and services that residents experience every day.
- Strategic challenge without chaos: Hexagon is ambitious but realistic, seeking to modernise services, innovate in how it operates, and increase the number of genuinely affordable homes it provides, while remaining financially sound and viable.
- A trusted partnership: the Chair will work with an experienced Chief Executive and Executive team who know the organisation well and value clear, constructive challenge.
- Space to lead: this is a pivotal non-executive role, not a ceremonial one. The Chair will help shape the organisation’s direction through the next corporate-plan cycle and contribute to decisions about Hexagon’s longer‑term positioning.
Who will thrive in this role
We’re not necessarily seeking an experienced Housing professional, but the successful candidate will need to be:
- An experienced Board or governance leader, comfortable in regulated, complex environments.
- Strategic and grounded – able to balance ambition with realism, particularly around risk, capacity and growth.
- Inclusive and curious – adept at drawing out different voices, welcoming healthy challenge, and keeping the focus on what is best for residents and the organisation.
Above all, the successful Chair will see governance as a team sport: working with Board colleagues, resident members and the Executive to own challenges together and move Hexagon forward.
Commitment to diversity
Hexagon’s Board already brings together people with significantly varied backgrounds, identities and life experiences, and this diversity is recognised as a source of strength. Applications are actively welcomed from individuals who are under‑represented in senior non‑executive roles, including (but not limited to) women, people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, people with lived experience of social housing, and people from a range of socio‑economic backgrounds.
A candidate’s perspective, story and difference are not simply “welcome”; they are seen as integral to helping Hexagon navigate the tough challenges facing the organisation and the wider housing sector.
