Brighter Futures

Role: Chair of the Board

Remuneration: £7,500 p.a.

This is a Chair role for someone who knows that good governance should enable ambition — not simply manage risk.

Brighter Futures has rebuilt strongly after a challenging period of change. With a clearer platform for the future, the organisation is now focused on embedding its progress and pursuing sustainable growth, diversification and partnerships that will strengthen its long-term resilience.

We are seeking an experienced Chair to lead the Board through this next chapter.

You will bring the confidence to the Board, create a culture of constructive challenge and ensure that decisions are purposeful, well governed and aligned to Brighter Futures’ mission. You will be a visible, values-led partner to the Chief Executive: supportive when needed, challenging when required, and unwavering in your focus on the organisation’s long-term success.

What you will bring

We are looking for an established Chair with experience of:

  • Leading boards through periods of change, challenge or transition.
  • Strengthening governance, accountability, ethical leadership and Board effectiveness.
  • Working within a regulated, publicly accountable or closely scrutinised environment.
  • Supporting sustainable growth, organisational development, investment, partnerships or diversification.
  • Providing robust oversight of financial performance, strategic risk and organisational sustainability.
  • Building trusted, candid and productive relationships with chief executives, executives and fellow Board members.
  • Championing inclusive leadership, positive culture, equality, diversity and inclusion.

Housing or supported-housing experience would be valuable, but it is not essential. What matters most is that you understand how to lead a Board in a mission-led, regulated environment: balancing ambition with assurance, supporting the executive without stepping into management, and keeping the organisation focused on its purpose.

Why Brighter Futures?

You will join at a pivotal moment. The foundations have been rebuilt; the opportunity now is to help shape what comes next.

You will work with an organisation that is committed to improving outcomes for the people and communities it serves, and with a Board and executive team that want to build a confident, collaborative and high-performing culture.

Your contribution will include helping Brighter Futures to:

  • Turn transformation into lasting organisational resilience.
  • Agree and deliver a sustainable approach to growth and diversification.
  • Build partnerships that create meaningful social and commercial value.
  • Maintain strong regulatory, financial and customer-focused governance.
  • Develop a cohesive Board that can make clear, well-balanced decisions for the future.

Time commitment

The role requires a minimum commitment of approximately 4 to 5 days per month. This includes Board and committee activity, preparation, regular engagement with the Chief Executive, Board development, stakeholder engagement and occasional events outside normal working hours.

The new Chair is expected to take up post early in 2027.

Diversity & Inclusion

Brighter Futures believe diverse perspectives strengthen governance and decision-making. As champions of inclusive leadership, we encourage candidates who share our values of openness, transparency, and social justice to apply—regardless of age, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or socio-economic background.

Brighter Futures is committed to making reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process. Please contact Greenacre Recruitment to discuss any requirements that would enable you to participate fully.
