Housing Specialist (Interim)

£530 per day | 4 days per week | Up to 40 weeks over 12 months, East Sussex | Hybrid

If you’re an accomplished housing leader seeking a high‑impact interim role, this assignment offers the rare opportunity to combine strategic Head of Housing responsibilities with hands‑on leadership of Housing Needs and Homelessness services during a period of organisational transition.

This is a mixed, senior role requiring a confident professional who can operate across the full breadth of local authority housing functions — from statutory homelessness duties and allocations through to strategic housing development, performance management and corporate leadership.

The Role

As the Housing Specialist, you will provide both strategic direction and operational oversight across a wide-ranging housing portfolio. You’ll act as the council’s senior housing advisor, ensuring statutory compliance, excellent customer outcomes and robust decision‑making across:

• Housing Needs, Housing Solutions and Homelessness Prevention
• Temporary Accommodation and Rough Sleeping initiatives
• Housing Allocations and the Housing Register
• Housing Development, enabling and affordable housing programmes
• Strategic housing policy, governance and performance management

You’ll work closely with senior officers and elected Members, representing the organisation at regional partnerships and multi‑agency forums. Much of the work will require independent judgement, initiative and the ability to manage complex, high‑risk casework confidently.

What You’ll Bring

We’re looking for a seasoned housing professional with:

• Significant senior leadership experience within local authority housing
• Extensive knowledge of Housing Act Parts VI & VII and the Homelessness Reduction Act
• Strong experience of service improvement, transformation and performance management
• Proven ability to advise Members and senior leadership teams
• A recognised housing qualification (CIH Level 4 or above preferred)
• Excellent communication, partnership‑building and strategic leadership skills
